Teens and Mental Health

Today a speaker came to our class to talk about the mental health of teenagers.

A mental disorder is defined as being something that affects a person's thinking, emotional state, and behavior

It disrupts relationships, daily activities, and attendance

Anxiety : An uncontrollable irrational fear
Anxiety can be good, but it is bad when it it becomes uncontrollable and interferes with the quality of life
     Symptoms:
Physical    : pounding heart, short of breath, tremors, insomnia
Emotional : irritability, restlessness, trouble concentrating

Normal Anxiety  : just the normal fight or flight fear response
Problem Anxiety : constant fear that is overwhelming

General Anxiety: irrational worry and tension
Social Anxiety: extremely self conscious
Specific Phobias: irrational amount of fear for specific objects
Panic Disorder: feelings of terror that can become physical

Anxiety can be triggered or introduced by biological reasons, environmental reasons, and life circumstances

Depression : Loss of pleasure for all or nearly all day, can be accompanied by irritability
Daily Symptoms:

- significance weight change; appetite change
- change in activity
- loss of energy
- insomnia or hypersomnia
- thoughts of suicide and worthlessness

Sadness : a triggered event creates reasonable emotional response
Depression : can be initiated by an event but then constant for all events

Triggers: heredity, brain chemistry, drugs/medications, environmental, stress

Suicide : Permanent coping strategy 
Signs of Suicide:
- threats of suicide

- strong will to die, loss of will to live
- not sleeping
- anxious and depressed

Behavioral clues:
- giving away prized possessions
- any attempt to suicide
- acquiring a gun or stockpiling pills

Situational clues:
- fired/expelled
- loss of a major relationship
- witnessed another suicide

QPR:
- Question a person about suicide
- Persuade the person to get help
- Refer them to get help
